Also...versus the industry:
The national trends and my station’s performance over the three years I was PD at KGBY “Y92.5” in Sacramento…
| AC Format Nationwide
W 25-54 AQH Persons | All Formats Nationwide W 25-54 Persons Using Radio
| KGBY Sacramento W 25-54 AQH Persons |
2004 | 1163300 | 6129000 | 3000 |
2005 | 1083500 -6.9% since 2004 | 6043500 -1.4% since 2004 | 3300 +10.0% since 2004 |
2006 | 1025300 -11.9% since 2004 | 5978500 -2.5% since 2004 | 4100 +36.7% since 2004 |
Total USA figures are from Arbitron’s “Format Trends” & “Persons Using Radio” reports, Mon-Sun 6A-12M, averages of quarterly reports for each year cited. KGBY figures are from Arbitron “Maximi$er” reports for Sacramento, Mon-Sun 6A-12M, 4-book avgs.
Hmmm.....
In raw AQH numbers of listeners (not "shares!"), the AC format has declined almost 12% since 2004. The number of people using traditional radio of all formats has dropped 2.5%.
Meanwhile, my most recent station is up 36.7% in the last two years!
And that’s just the Arbitron measurement of our regular “over-the-air” product. Ownership also asked us to make a big deal out of the website…we gave them a great looking site with local scenes on every page and fresh content every day. They asked us to pay special attention to streaming…we gave them the best sounding, most glitch-free stream in the company. We were challenged to marry on-air with online…we gave them the 2pm “Y On Demand” hour and let the listeners program the station’s music in real time while they worked!
